Baby Birds

Weeks ago Trevin and I were sitting in the computer room and noticed 2 doves in the hanging flower baskets out the window. We watched as one dove sat in the basket while another flew back and forth across the street to pick up one piece of straw/hay/grass at a time and bring it back to the other one who then proceeded to make a nest.It was really fascinating. Talk about persistence and patience....one piece at a time. A couple of days later we noticed an egg(!) in the nest and then the next day there were 2 eggs!!! We waited and waited for those baby birds to hatch and then finally they did! I think they hatched the day we left to go to TN for a few days so we didn't get to see them until they were a few days old. It was hard to get a look at them because the Mama Bird seemed to always be sitting on top of them! I finally got a picture...

They have gotten big fast and we have really had fun watching them. (That's the Mama on the left and a baby on the right. You can see the other baby's head just to the right of the first baby bird.)

Last weekend while Kelly was mowing the grass he noticed another nest in a bush over by the air conditioner. There were 2 speckled eggs inside! Of course we've been checking on them ever since. On Tuesday the kids came running to tell me that the eggs had hatched and as Kyler put it, "They look really gross." They must have just hatched because they look like newborns!

How fun! What a great process for you to witness! You're right ~ the patience it takes for them to build a nest is amazing. I remember a bird making a nest in a hanging basket on our front porch once ~ but I was unaware until I walked out the front door one day and it flew out ~ scared the heebee-jeebees out of me. I know you will miss your closeness to nature there in AL.

What a fun summer activity. :) I have only seen cracked bird eggs. I am glad to know that birds are successful.

That is amazing!
And so precious that they chose your hanging planter for their nest. I think the birds are going to miss you too and just needed to be close as long as possible.
