Nothing like a little organization to make a girl feel good

I have been trying to get more organized around the house and finishing up some projects in the process. The first thing I did was to make (long overdue) chore charts for the kids. We basically used the same set up in Alabama but there we used magnets on the fridge. I wanted our chore charts to look a little nicer this time around so I bought some frames and added metal sheeting. I bought little wooden circles and let the kids paint them whatever color they wanted. Then I wrote their chores on the front and added magnets to the back. A little vinyl lettering at the top and voila!.....new chore charts!

I also re-purposed our artwork display boards. They used to be really long and held 6 papers across but I didn't have that much space here so I just cut one of them in half and put one above the other. The top one holds a paper that they're proud of and I'm using the bottom one to keep all their important papers from school for the week (homework assignments, permission slip forms, etc.) This whole system has brought much needed order to our house!

Another big challenge for me has been packing lunches. Have I mentioned that I HATE packing lunches? If I were rich, I would definitely have my kids buy school lunches EVERY DAY. But that's not happenin' right now, if you know what I mean. So I finally figured out a way to make it easier for me. I made a "Menu" for the week that will stay the same. Monday is PB sandwiches (with jelly, honey, or raisins). Tuesday is Egg salad, Chicken salad, or Tuna salad (whichever one I make for that week). Wednesday is ham or turkey day. They can have it on a sandwich, in a wrap or as "lunchables". Thursday is PB sandwiches again. Friday is grilled cheese. Then we just add yogurt, fruit, veggies, and/or a cookie. I am also trying to pack lunches at night and the kids rotate being the "Lunch Helper" (it's one of their chores) and they basically just help me get it all together. It's working beautifully so far. Last night as I was preparing dinner Kyler was bored so he went ahead and packed all the lunches all by himself. LOVE that boy! :) He thought maybe in a few weeks that everyone should just pack their own lunch. Our current system seems to be working for now but I told him that we could definitely re-evaluate in a month or so.

I finally got our new FHE board finished.....well, almost finished. I still need to add the nails and make some cute name cards to hang on the pegs. I really like how Sharon made hers but I haven't decided if I'm going to use a picture or just the name on mine.

Here is my beautiful red wall that Kelly painted for me! I am working on getting 3 pictures of the kids printed to go in those frames to hang above the mantel. Kelly wants to hang them on the wall. I originally wanted to just lean them on the mantel but I think they will look better a little higher on the wall so the top of the frames aren't at the same level as the top of the windows like they are now. For my birthday Kelly got me this Believe thing-a-ma-bob that I fell in love with at an art store weeks ago and I like it on the mantel. What else should I put on the mantel?

Look what else we got last week!FINALLY I have a piano again. Happy, happy. The plan is for me to teach the kids to play (well at least get them started until we can find a real teacher). Not sure when exactly we're going to fit that into our schedules but I am hopeful that we can. Kierstyn is especially interested so I may just start with her. Anybody have a suggestion as to what program to use to teach them?

And back to food....I have been planning my meals one week at a time and it has worked well. That way I can see what we have going on each night and also based on my work schedule and just plan accordingly. Any more than that is just too overwhelming for me at the moment.

I welcome your tips and ideas on how you manage to keep things flowing at your house. Come on, leave me a comment and teach me something new! If it actually works for me I'll be your friend for life!!!!

I'm envious of your organization! Love the chore charts, love the red wall, love the big square frames, love the 'believe', love the new piano (post a picture of that whole room, I'm confused with all your new furniture!) I'm sure there are tons of fun artsy kick nacks around Chatt you can find to go on that mantel!!

Wow-- you're amazing.
This is Christianne Green-- remember me? I linked on to your blog from Mckenzie's.
I hate making lunches too. I just read an article in Parents magazine about "laptop lunches" They are these really cool (a little expensive) lunchboxes that have compartments for everything, so you don't have to use baggies or anything. The idea is that you can lay them on the counter and fill them up much more quickly than other lunch boxes and you tend to get more creative because you see the food spread out and organized. Check it out by googling "laptop lunches"-- I'm thinking about trying it...

Hi Jennifer, I'm actually reading blogs today. I love your piano. It is beautiful. Congratulations!! and good luck on getting your kids started on that. It sounds like you are way on top of things. On the lunch topic, I pack the same thing for Jim's lunch everyday and have for the last many, many years--lunchmeat and cheese sandwich, chips, drink. He never complains (I guess he knows that if he did he would be making it himself). Your kids are lucky to have a mom who will actually make them grilled cheese and chicken salad. I'm glad things are going well for you in Chattanooga, keep up the good work!!

Love it all ~ magnetic boards to red wall to piano etc. etc. Wonderful! Sounds like you are on TOP of it all ~ only suggestions ~ feed the kids breakfast before they go to bed and have them sleep in their clothes for school. . .

I love, love, love everything!!!! I am dying to get organized here. I have a thousand things spinning around in my head--I just need to get them done. Kelly has become the pro at painting red walls!!

I have tried something new this year with lunches and it is working great. I do all my grocery shopping on Saturday night. When I get home, I take all the lunch stuff and go ahead and put it in baggies. I peel and cut up all the veggies. I have a shelf in one of my cabinets where all the non-perishable items go. I then have a shelf in my refrigerator where everything else goes. All I have to do is pull out baggies and put it in their lunch box. It is easy for them to do as well. That way everything is done Saturday night and I don't have to think about it. My kids usually don't eat sandwiches. If they do want a sandwich, that is made the night before. Not only does it help me with lunches, but the food I buy for lunches is used for lunches and not eaten before the week is over. It is working so far.

I may have to steal your chore chart idea. I am in desperate need of something. Jen has been using myrewardboard.com on the computer. I have to find something.

I am in desperate need of organization. You would think after two yard sales this summer I would have this place decluttered. It just hasn't happended yet. I will one day get a system that works. That day better be soon or I am going to go crazy!!!

One more thing. I have all my old piano books if you want to borrow them. Landon is using different books for his lessons.

Well I had my idea and it looks like someone already stole it. I am an in the bag girl. I bag fruit chips cookies etc. so I just have to do sandwhichs the night before. I do not enjoy lunches at all. But that helps. I also love your new house. How fun!!

Hey, you are amazing! I guess you are feeling like if you are not orgainized with your new schedule, working and all, that you wouldn't be able to get on top of things. What great idea's! Oh and happy birthday and that yummy pie recipe sounds quite divine! ;-) Thanks for sharing.

Jenn, Try the Suzuki (sp?) method for the piano. It works GREAT with small children and older ones too I believe. They have very simple books to start off with and I really enjoyed using them when I was learning at 16! I only did one year of piano, but if I had done more I would have stuck with the Suzuki method.

This is Traci (Dee's sister). I log onto your site from her blog...thought I'd check out what you had new going on, since you helped me with my blog. Like you, I love organization...everything runs smoother. I have a chore chart(not as cute as yours), but at the beginning of each week, we decide on a family award (movies, dinner, etc). Then as each chore is completed, I place a sticker on it, and if everything has been completed by the end of the week, then we get our reward. It gives the kids an incentive to work towards, and they are excited about the reward. As for lunches, I can't help you there because that is my husband's responsibility in the morning. He helps me out quite a bit...even irons the kids clothes in the mornings. He doesn't do anything special with lunches, though, because I only have two kids to worry about....the kids do help him, though. I love your FHE board...will have to see about buying one of those. And like you, I love color on my walls...white or ecru is boring to me....so love your red wall. Keep up the good work...keeps the rest of us in line. Adios!
