A New Look & I need some advice

This is what the front of our house looked like when we bought it. We knew it needed something so we started with a pair of black rocking chairs and a black star on the front porch. That was ok for awhile but we thought it still needed something else.

So last week we put up some black shutters.

I really like them but now I'm wondering, "What else?"

Should we paint the door? What color? Or should we just leave it like it is? I'm thinking that the house needs a pop of color. Flowers, maybe? A garden box on the front rails? From the 2nd story window on the left? Planters by the front door? Keep in mind that I'm not very good with flowers. HELP!!! I welcome your suggestions/advice. Thanks!

I loooove it!!!! I think a pop of color on the front door would look fantastic! Maybe red? I also think a black planter box under the window over the garage would look good. Although here in the South I've seen people put fake flowers in them (I'm assuming since it's so hot and stuff dies). I like the idea of planters on the porch too or maybe over the railing...I'd have to look at it in person. I just love that black star and chairs too. I love your house and your neighborhood!

OH, your home looks BEAUTIFUL! The black shutters and star look fantastic. I am a big fan of the black door too (ours is black, and we painted our last home's front door black, too). Flowers would make all the difference. Petunias are so pretty in the spring and summer, and they are so easy to keep up.

I really like now- the shutters really look good. I agree with "kg" Maybe a red door- but of course I would pick that. Flowers would be nice- and fake ones might be the way to go.

I think your house is adorable! The shutters look great. I'm not a good one to give advice on flowers but I would definitely paint the door red!

Love the shutters! Looks great. I like the wooden door, but if you want color that might do it for you to paint it. Our house needs to be painted. We've talked with a painter, but now I'm tryin to pick a color. Do I stick with the tan, or choose something else? Finding something that looks good with the shade of brick. I like your white! I was thinking white, but we don't have room for shutters to add some color. You've done a great job!

Your house is adorable! I would love to see a black door, too. That look is really sharp!! Can't wait to see what you decide to do!:)

I like the wood door- it is more natural and kind of ties in the star and rockers to an earthy country feel. It looks nice and cozy to me. You would think me being limited to doing ANYTHING to my house I would be full of suggestions- I guess my restrictions have stopped my thought process. I would like flowers and if you don't have neighborhood kids to destroy them then I'd say do it even if you aren't that good at keeping up with them.

I'll just throw in my two cents...
I'd keep the wood look to the door. And add a planter with flowers over the garage. Anything you do will look fantastic. It's a beautiful home, so you're already guaranteed a winner.
Although...if I did decide to paint the door, I would go with that really pretty smokey blue. It is amazing with black.

But I have a feeling you're going to paint your door red...

Hi Jen,

I am on your blog, can you believe it??? You probably can guess my vote for the door...definitely black! The shutters look great, such a cute house and I am still waiting for pics of the boys room!

Gosh jen your house is like a little doll house. I love white house with black shutters!!!! This is what I would do...although I never get done what I want to do I usually know what I would like to do!!!
Paint the door black and plant red flowers. I would do red flowers in those long planter boxes that hook onto the rails of the porches. I would do one on each rail. I would also add a clay pot with red flowers some where by the door.
Now you have tons more ideas to weed through...I'll be anxious to see what you come up with to give it the special Jen touch!

I love your house Jen! I love everyone's ideas as well! I would definitely do some planter boxes on the porch rails with red flowers or you could do hanging baskets between the porch posts...maybe ferns? (though I haven't done this at our house because I'm afraid they would drip dirty water all over the porch and I'm against anything that causes a mess (other than my kids of course!)) Good luck and can't wait to see your next "after" picture!
